Brett Gillard Medal

On behalf of Sydney Scorpions executive and general committee, players, referees, coaches, managers and all our affiliates Scorpions would like to take this opportunity to thank Brett Gillard for his tenure with Sydney Scorpions – most recently as our Regional Director from 2007 until 2015.  Deservedly Brett received his Sydney Scorpions Life Membership induction in 2011 and his strong leadership has been the foundation that has delivered our great permit so much recent glory.  It’s no co-incidence that during his reign Scorpions has experienced unprecedented success. Scorpions are pleased to announce that our Scorpions Regional Directors Award which was introduced last year, will now be known as the Brett Gillard Medal.  Congratulations on this years recipient Dave Nolan for his outstanding contribution to Sydney Scorpions.

Scorpions Elite 8 Medal – Boland Trophy

Scorpions are pleased to announce the introduction of our Boland Trophy. These are awarded to our Elite 8 Scorpions Medal male and female players. Mark Boland first became involved with Touch Football when he was just 13 years of age.  Mark played in 17 straight State Cups with his beloved Parramatta in which he won 12 titles. He represented NSW from 1985 to 1999 in Men’s Open and was captain of Sydney Scorpions Men’s Open team from 1996 – 1999.  At this time Scorpions won the first 4 NTL titles in the Men’s Open division.  He is the only player to have received a NSW Touch Association life membership whilst having his famous number eight playing shirt retired. Mark also played in four World Cup’s representing Australia between 1986-1999 – with a total of 37 appearances.  He was inducted into the Touch Football Australia Hall of Fame in 2003.  Scorpions would like to thank Mark for being at our Scorpions dinner and presenting this year’s Boland Trophies to Daniel Barton and Emma Williams.

Scorpions Junior Recognition Awards

Scorpions are delighted to announce the introduction of our Scorpions Junior Recognition Awards.  Awarded to Scorpions junior players who have excelled through our junior levels and higher representative honours including Elite 8, State and Country.  These awards, for male and female, will be presented annually at our Scorpions Junior Regionals dinner. At our recent NTL Scorpions dinner we announced that these awards will be named in honour of two of our best junior players to come through the Scorpions junior ranks with both players having gone onto represent their state and country at the highest level.

Looking at the touch CV of our male player and it’s a very impressive read.  He was selected in Scorpions junior teams from the age of 14, and at this time he was considered a fringe player.  However only a few years later he went on to represent the Australian Men’s Open at just 17. He was instrumental in Scorpions winning the Men’s Open title in 2010 and has been an important member of our teams since. In summary he has won Youth & Open Trans-Tasman titles, two World Cups, has been an Australian Flag Bearer and Captain, and won multiple NSW Player of the Year and Player of the Series awards.  It gives Scorpions great pleasure to announce that our Boys Scorpions Junior Recognition Award is to be named the Sam Brisby Medal.

Moving onto our female player and her touch CV is equally as impressive.  She made her Scorpions debut with the Girls 14’s winning that division and also making the NSWTA Merit Team.  In 2009 she scored a unique double by taking out both the Girls 18’s and Women’s Opens Scorpions Medals in the same year.  In 2011 she captained her country to victory in the Youth Trans-Tasman series. She has represented both NSW and Australia at Women’s Open level and won a World Cup with the Australian Mixed Opens.  In 2014 she was a valuable member of the NSW Scorpions Women’s Elite 8 undefeated champions.  Unfortunately injury prevented her from playing in the recent 2015 World Cup here in Coffs Harbour.  It gives Scorpions great pleasure to announce that our Girls Scorpions Junior Recognition Award is to be named the Sarah Peattie Medal.

Co-incidentally both Sam and Sarah were still recovering from injury and unable to be at our Scorpions dinner however they did prepare a message of thanks.
